Overview: Reese McGuire was a heralded high school prospect prior to the 2013 MLB Rule 4 Draft because of his advanced defensive tools and potential to develop into a solid hitter. Thus far in his minor league career McGuire has not disappointed defensively. In 2014 the Pirates challenged him with a rapid advancement to full season A ball at just 19 years of age. He was the youngest play on the West Power opening day roster. The stiffer competition of the SALLY League helped McGuire polish his receiving skills. His receiving skills continued to improve as the season wore on. McGuire is noted for his ability to shut down the running game. He has nabbed 40% of base stealers in the minor leagues thus far. His success in this department is attributed to an exceptionally quick release and great footwork. His throwing strength is just a touch better than average. At the plate McGuire has shown a good contact rate, but he has not hit the ball with much authority. His 2014 season was filled with a lot of soft contact. I watched 25+ of McGuire’s ABs in 2014 and he was too content to slap the ball the other way. He either would not, or could not turn on the ball. He is still very young and the bat has plenty of time to develop.
